Kartik Swami Temple Trek
The sacred abode of Lord Kartikeya is ideally located at an altitude of 3,048 m providing the most amazing views of Himalayan ranges from its environ. 40km from Rudraprayag on the Rudraprayag – Pokhri route is a village Kanakchauri from where one can access the temple of Kartik swami. The Kartik Swami temple is dedicated to the elder son of Lord Shiva, Kartikeya, who offered his bones as testimony of his devotion to his father. Here is the spot where Kartik sacrificed himself. It is a famous spot for pilgrims to worship as the idol depicts Kartik’s bones. The temple is perched at the highest point of the mountain and is reached through a thrilling trek that takes you through some rugged terrain as well as enchanting greenery. On the left of Kartik Swami Temple lies Uttarakhand’s Garhwal region, while on its right is the region of Kumaon.
How to Reach Kartik Swami Temple
One needs to reach Rudraprayag before heading onto Kartik swami Temple. Rudraprayag can be easily accessed from most cities in Uttarakhand and rest of North India.
By Road: From Delhi / Dehradun / Haridwar / Rishikesh, buses and Taxis are available till Rudraprayag.
Rudraprayag to Kanak Chauri is 40 Km. Buses, Taxis as well as shared jeeps are available till Kanak Chauri from Rudraprayag .
By Rail: The nearest railway station is at Rishikesh. It is about 140 km from Rudraprayag.
By Air: Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun is the nearest airport.
When to Visit Kartik Swami Temple
It is one of the few places in the region that is accessible throughout the year. The winter trek is more difficult as the route is completely covered in snow. But the best season is spring and early summer when the Rhododendrons are in full bloom.
Kartikswami Temple opens at 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM (Timings may change during the festivals day). Tunganath has a cool climate all through the seasons. April to August offers cool and pleasant climate and the right period to spend relaxing moments in the outdoors and is ideal for temple visits. September to November is good for sightseeing and temple visits. December to March is snow capped valley.
Festivals at Kartikswami Temple:-
Kartik Swamy Temple celebrates two festivities in a year. These include the eleven day Kalash Yatra during the month of June and the auspicious Kartika Purnima which falls in the month of November.
- Distance from Rudraprayag to Kanakchauri is 40km, You will get last bus at 4.30PM from Rudraprayag.
- Do not forget to take water along with you as the temple has no water supply.
- There is water shortage around the temple area, so make sure to carry water.
