Saptkund Trek is the most amazing place to visit when you are ready for a great trekking tour! There are many beautiful treks available to attend in Uttarakhand but Saptkund Trek is one of the most amazing trekking sites to enjoy, if you are looking for something new and less known to trekkers.

There has not been much publicity for the trek but surely it is an adventure in the area that is pristine and untouched. It is a difficult trek but the reward is heaven. The trek can be made easier by increasing the number of trek days. Its peaceful and soothing landscape will strike a chord with your heart and you will be able to witness what unperturbed nature, really is like. Sprawling green meadows, decorated with diverse alpine flowers and happy little streams flowing by – all with the picturesque mountains all around.

How to Reach Saptkund Lake

Sapt kund (Seven lakes) is a group of lakes nestled in the foothills of gigantic Nandaghunti peak. The lakes are located in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 5400m to 5700m.

One has to cover a 28 Km trek from the Pagna Village to reach Saptkund. Pagna village is located at a distance of about 35 Km from the town of Chamoli.

When to Visit Saptkund Lake

The best time to visit Saptkund is in summers from April – September when the weather is pleasant and is ideal for trekking. Even the monsoon season presents some of the most incredible views of nature. Winters can be very chilly and the temperature can hit as low as -8 degree Celsius. Thus, it is not a good time to visit the place.

Saptkund Lake Trek Details


The 28 Km trek is a moderate to difficult trek as the route is quite steep and there are no villages in the route. However, the beautiful views and dense forests along with splendid Himalayan peaks give visitors a tranquil environment.  

The sparsely known trail offers the peace and serenity as very few trekkers venture there as well as the adventurous feel of exploring an almost unknown territory. The complete trek would take total 5 days, 3 days for up and 2 for down. Total distance covered in up and down is almost 56 km.

Day1: Rishikesh to Chamoli

  • Start at 8:00 am by road towards Chamoli.  
  • Uphill Picturesque Drive, Devaprayag, Confluence of Bhagirathi and Alaknanda.
  • You will reach Chamoli by the evening. Explore the place as you will be staying overnight here.

Day2: Chamoli to Jhenji Village

  • A short drive from Chamoli to Pagna Village takes 02 hr.
  • From Pagna, Trek starts towards Jhenji Village (9km)
  • Spend the rest of your day at the camp to help yourself acclimatize.

Day3: Jhenji to Tree Line (7km)

  • From Jhenji village the next trek is for 4.5 hours.
  • Pass through the dense forests. Overnight stay in Camp

Day4: Tree Line to Saptkund Bugyal (7km)

  • Enjoy the spread of green meadows & waterfalls while trekking.

Day5: Saptkund Bugyal to Saptkund lake and Back to Tree line. (14km)  

  • Early quick walk will help you pass through beautiful meadow.
  • Enjoy the beauty of Saptkund meadow or Himalayan peaks right in front of you.
  • Steep climb to reach the top.

Day6: Tree Line to Chamoli

  • Start early after morning refreshments to descend to Chamoli.
  • Overnight stay here as it will be late in the evening.
  • Weather on the trek varies continuously. You can face sudden rain, storm or snowfall, so be prepared for all situations. The temperature on top lies between 0 to -5 deg centigrade.
  • This trek is very highly recommended for those who like unspoiled nature and greatest views of Himalayas.
